Home Insurance Not Bought By Tenants

Recent research by Zurich Insurance has found that tenants across the UK are gambling nearly £8billion of personal possessions by not protecting themselves against bad weather or crime.

Almost a million private renters (37 per cent of those surveyed) have confessed they have no contents insurance, despite the fact that a third (33 per cent) of private renters surveyed said that they estimate their possessions to be worth more than £10,000 in value, with some individual items worth over £1,500.

More worryingly, a fifth (22 per cent) admit that it would take over two years to replace all of their possessions if they were stolen or damaged and a third (32 per cent) think that they would never be able to afford to replace all of their personal belongings.

One in 10 (eight per cent) of those who do not have insurance mistakenly believe that their landlord’s insurance policy covers their contents, while a quarter (24 per cent) believe that their risk is simply not high enough to make insurance worthwhile.

For some renters it’s other financial priorities taking over. The pressures of paying bills (56 per cent), debt repayments (36 per cent) and pension contributions (12 per cent) are seen as more important than taking out cover for their home possessions, despite the fact that this attitude could cost dearly in the long-run.

Frivolity could also be to blame for tenants forsaking contents insurance, as some respondents said that they saw spending their money on luxuries such as holidays (10 per cent), socialising (9 per cent) and buying new clothes (7 per cent) as higher priorities than insurance.

Steve Gilbert, home underwriting manager for Zurich Insurance said: “At this time of year, when many households are still recovering from the cost of Christmas, contents insurance is often seen by renters as non-essential, and can slip down their list of priorities. Be it funding other financial priorities, their lifestyles or even perhaps saving to get a foot on the property ladder themselves, they need to be aware that not having insurance could cost them dearly in the long run – especially if faced with the daunting prospect of replacing all their possessions.

“Whether renters are simply willing to risk their goods, or if it’s a matter of confusion over who’s responsible for cover, we urge all renters to take some time to investigate their position, consider their risk and see if they can really afford not to be covered.”

Insurance Cheaper Than Ever Before

With both the credit crunch and food prices starting to bite, it’s a relief that when it comes to financial products such as insurance, the news is a bit better. According to recent research, home and car insurance prices have stalled rather unexpectedly. Even better, policies for travel and life insurance are now cheaper than ever.

Home insurance premiums were widely expected to go up following last year’s disastrous floods. However, according to the latest British Insurance Premium Index from the AA, these price rises haven’t happened. In the first quarter of 2008, average buildings insurance premiums actually fell by 0.2%, and they’re still only 4.5% higher than when the Index started in 1994.

Average combined home and contents insurance premiums fell by 1.4% during the same period.

Andrew Strong of AA Insurance says that the slight fall in premiums for buildings cover can be explained by a rise in the number of risks not being quoted by some insurers, as they become more sensitive to flood risk. The floods were also expected to affect the price of car insurance - and the AA’s index report reflects this: In the last year, the average annual premium quoted for comprehensive car insurance has risen by nearly 6%.

But there is hope: the latest figures show a slight reversal in the trend with average comprehensive car insurance premiums falling by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2008. According to AA Insurance, this is largely due to the time of year. Because it’s currently a ‘peak period’ for car insurance sales, many companies are holding rates down to try and gain market share.

Home and car insurance premiums are expected to rise again over the coming year, so act fast.

On a more positive note, if it’s travel insurance you’re after, there’s some good news. A recent report by financial research company Defaqto has found that most travel insurance policies have never been cheaper.

The vast majority of single trip and annual travel policies have fallen significantly in price in the last year alone. For example, the average premium for a single, week-long, family trip to Europe has dropped by 6.2% since 2007.

Furthermore, the average annual cover premium for a single person travelling in Europe has dropped by 6.7%. Increased competition for travel insurance can be thanked for these falls. The large number of policies available online has triggered a price war between insurers, turning it into a real buyer’s market.

If you’re looking for life insurance, you’ll be pleased to know that these premiums have plummeted in recent years. The average cost of life cover has fallen by 50% over the past decade so it might be worthwhile to trade in your existing policy for a new, much cheaper one.

Two main factors have caused these price falls: The life insurance market has become fiercely competitive, and people are living longer (therefore posing much less of a risk to term-assurance companies and helping to drive premiums down).

It seems that now is a good time to take out a new insurance policy. This is particularly true of car and home insurance, as premiums are likely to rise - possibly steeply - in the months to come.

If your current policy is up for renewal, remember to shop around rather than automatically renewing with your existing company. You’re likely to get a much better deal as a new customer. And if you are thinking of switching policies early, make sure you check what cancellation or early termination fees apply.

Combining Medicare and Medicare Supplements is Cost Effective

Retiring often means living on a fixed income, something that wasn’t always the case when you were younger. It’s not an easy adjustment, and it often means that watching pennies becomes a daily event. When it comes to important issues like health care insurance, though, you want to know you have the coverage you need when you need it.

You also want to know where to get the most cost effective health care insurance and still be covered for all contingencies. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds, as you can take advantage of the parts and plans provided by the government under the auspices of Medicare and the Medicare supplements – designed to fill in the gaps the original health care insurance was supposed to provide.

While you may know about Medicare as it’s in the news more often than not when the country’s debt is discussed, you might not know that much about the parts A – L that are supplement choices to augment your Medicare coverage. With a combination like this, not only can you budget in advance, you will save money on health care coverage.

Another little known resource available for you is a tool that will help you save money on drugs over the year by showing you which pharmacies in your area are offering good rates for the drugs you are taking. You can find this tool at: http://www.medicare.gov/pdphome.asp. Look for the title that says “Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder.” You will need your red, white and blue Medicare card and the best option to choose is Personalized Plan Search.

Knowing where to find the best prices for drugs, whether it’s through an approved pharmacy or a mail-order drug company, makes cost effective sense. It’s also a way to find out what other choices you have in terms of generic, less expensive drugs that will work just as well for your condition.

Shopping for Medicare Supplements Will Save You Money

The good news is that you will actually save money on health care insurance, or to be more specific, save money on Medicare supplements. This is just about the only area in the whole Medicare health insurance business where you will save money by calling around for quotes. And not just save nickels and dimes either, but enough to make a difference over the year.

It’s possible to save money on Medicare supplements and still be able to get decent health care coverage. Without getting too complicated here, this is possible because in all states Medicare supplements are priced the same. Yes, priced the same, however, insurance companies don’t have to offer anything more than Part A – period. The other letters of the alphabet B-L are optional. And since Medicare supplements parts B-L are optional, insurance companies tend to charge what the market will bear if they offer them at all.

Sometimes the market will bear a higher rate and sometimes not. While this may sound a bit capricious, it’s actually more of a business decision, rather than an effect of market competition. But business decisions made in corporate boardrooms have a way of trickling down to consumers. Say, for instance, you are 70 years old and are asking about Part F or J (which covers all expenses). Call big brand name company number one and the quote is $115 a month. Call slightly less well known company two and the quote is $100 a month – and two simple phone calls garner a savings of $180 a year.

Of course, this is just an example of savings that can be had by calling around for rates on your Medicare supplements. What you may actually discover is that the monthly savings could be larger, racking up a bigger amount by the end of the year. So it’s really well worth your while to make a few calls and get some quotes. Really, saving money in this day and age is a delightful bonus while still getting good health care coverage.

Meet the UK’s Barking Bikers!

With 266 years of experience and over 60,000 miles behind them, a unique breed of motorcyclists, who are quite literally ‘barking about biking’, have been unveiled today by Bennetts. Whilst most dogs remain confined to a lead, these pet-rol heads live life in the fast lane and have been chosen by the insurance provider to launch an online initiative that identifies some of the UK’s weird and wonderful motorcycle riders and celebrates the passion for biking that they all share.

In the next few months Bennetts, the UK’s number one for bike insurance, will be conducting a nationwide search to discover the UK’s wackiest motorcyclists, which has kicked off with a search for the top canine cruisers. After being inundated with photographs and stories from across the country, they whittled down the entries to five top dogs who will be profiled on the company’s website to encourage other bikers to send in their stories and photographs.

Sharing a passion for motorbikes and riding with the wind in their ears, the Bennetts Barking Bikers are:

Boxer Slobber, aged 8 (56 dog years) from Salisbury

Terrier Pepper, aged 10 (70 dog years) from Cheltenham

Border Terrier Minnie, aged 9 (63 dog years) from the New Forest

Terrier Ronnie, aged 2 (14 dog years) from Warrington

Jack Russell Rocket, aged 9 (63 dog years) from Grimsby

With an array of compartments and harnesses to carry the dogs, together with goggles and accessories to ensure they look the part, these howling Hell’s Angels are kings of the road. Having covered over 27,000 miles in her lifetime, Border Terrier Minnie is the most experienced rider, travelling an average of 3,000 miles per year with her owner Peter Garner. With regular journeys of over 50 miles, Minnie is desperate to accompany Peter whenever he goes out on his bike.

Peter says, “Minnie has to be one of the nation’s top barking bikers as there aren’t many places I have visited without my favourite riding partner! Positioning her on the back of my Honda 500 complete with Doggles to protect her eyes, we have great fun on the road and attract a lot of attention from other road users!”

Bennetts Marketing Director, Mark Fells said, “We wanted to launch a section on our website that celebrates the passion for motorbikes which all bikers share and we’re always looking for unusual biking stories - the barking bikers definitely fit the bill! By featuring them on our website, we hope many more bikers share their stories, photos and love of biking with us.”

How to beat the Credit Crunch: Ditch the car for a motorbike

A leading Personal Finance Expert has today revealed that Brits can save a staggering £337,700 over a lifetime by swapping their car for a motorbike.

The study, conducted by Chartered Financial Planner Martin Bamford, was commissioned by Bennetts, the UK’s number one for bike insurance, to investigate the cost difference between commuting to work in a car versus a bike.

With the increasing cost burden on motorists in mind, the research shows that car drivers could save over £6,500 a year (£130 per week) by riding a motorbike, when costs including finance, tax, depreciation and parking are taken into consideration. An easily overlooked expense highlighted in the findings is time – with riders able to save four and a half years over a lifetime from beating the traffic jams on a motorbike as opposed to a car.

The overall findings suggest it costs a staggering 47% more to drive a car to work rather than using a motorbike in the current economic climate. The saving is particularly relevant for Londoners, with those riding a bike in the capital saving a massive £1,920 a year getting to work by escaping the £8 a day congestion charge to enter into the central congestion charging zone.

The research was commissioned by Bennetts to support Ride to Work Day which falls today (16th July). Ride to Work Day is a national campaign introduced by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) to encourage all motorcyclists to get out and about on their bikes and ride to work, ideally with a pillion.

Endorsing the cost return in riding a motorbike, Martin Bamford found that bikers can make substantial savings of over £6,500 per year which include savings such as;
• Depreciation – £2,074
• Tax – £97
• Finance - £2,255
• Parking – £2,328

*Based on the average commute of 39 miles, five days a week, over the course of a year.

Martin Bamford says; “Running a car is significantly more expensive than riding a motorbike and with government plans to increase Vehicle Excise Duty, 55% of car drivers will be even worse off when new prices are introduced in 2009/10.”

The Personal Finance expert continued, “People tend to have various misconceptions around biking and often forget about the burden of depreciation - cars plummet in value shortly after you buy them and are an expensive to buy in the first place. The credit crunch is making it much more expensive to borrow money, so financing is likely to be made a lot cheaper if people decide to purchase a motorcycle.”

Mark Fells, Marketing Director at Bennetts says, “It’s incredible to see just how much bikers can save on the roads by travelling around on two wheels. We hope that these findings will encourage people to review their personal transport methods in an effort to lower costs and reduce the hassle of commuting.”
